Welcome to the River School Blog!
During October, River School’s pre-k classroom, the Giraffes, developed and presented a musical story performance called “Semu and Africa.” They wrapped up their first music unit of the school year – exploring tempo and the music and culture of West Africa. In addition to experimenting with new instruments and movements, the Giraffes were able to create costumes and prepare a performance to remind all of our River School children and families that it is okay to “dance your own way.”
This week, the children from our Upper West Side location went pumpkin picking at a farm. The children learned all about the animals and the equipment, and had a great time doing so. They even got to pet a rabbit and a baby chick!
The new school year is off to a great start and the children are enjoying a variety of enrichment activities as part of River School’s engaging, play-based curriculum. Music class with Mr. John have provided children in all of our classrooms with the opportunity to express themselves through music and movement. Miss Isabella started teaching Spanish lessons to our Giraffes (4-5 year olds) and they loved her first lesson. In addition to getting to know Miss Isabella, the children learned the song “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” in Spanish, and demonstrated everything they learned as they labeled body parts in Spanish on a life-size outline of one of the students.
The summer is winding down, and River School is excited to welcome new families to our community. River School enrolls children year round, who are 2 months old through 5 years old. New children are accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the year, as space becomes available. Apply using the application form for the school you are interested in, and either drop it off at River School, or send it to us by email, fax or snail mail.
